Artist Statement
This piece about my personality really focuses on my creativity and how I express it. Its easy to see that the eyes were focused and brought up right next to an array of different eyeshadow palettes. The eyes are typically used the most for expression and different colors and you can express yourself and your style well with eye shadow. Different eyeshadow palettes have varying factors of color, sparkliness, consistency and styles. I find that sometimes it’s difficult for me to express myself because I have never been the creative type. It used to be really hard to show my personality and style until I found makeup. I can really alter my makeup to however I want to and it has been really helpful over the past few years.
The flash fiction is a six-word story included in the picture is used with an explanation point and revolves around creativity and expression. The fiction is a 6-word story because I want it to be simplistic, bubbly and fun. The explanation point also shows the fun in what I do and how I enjoy it. The text is on top of my head to show that it’s always on my mind and I think about being creative a lot. The image and the flash fiction both show that expression doesn’t have to be a certain way, and that you can be creative colorful and fun to show how you feel and what your style is. Expression helps you feel better and it's a beautiful thing
Unit 1 Project Paper
From different movies, culture and learning experiences we are taught that you are a certain way, and we cannot change that. The bad guys were always the bad guys and the good guys were always the good guys, according to almost everything retained about character at a young age. Most people would typically agree that people are who they are, and they will always be that way. When I was growing up, I thought that I would always be the same exact person. While the majority of people, including myself, learned this, I would argue now with certainty that this is not exactly true thanks to this first unit in class. What I learned most in this class is that personality is not just strict and simple, it is fluid and always changing based on surroundings.
The Invisibilia podcast hosts from our reader response practice, Speigel and Miller, created “The Personality Myth”, an audio article and broadcast. If I could pick one thing that really clicked for me in understanding personality, I would choose this article/activity. This podcast sheds light on how others’ personalities are not the same and are constantly flowing and evolving. Interviews with people affected by these changes, ex-cons and professionals in the psychology field and others are brought up and used to prove that no one is always who they think they are. An expert on Invisibilia argues that, “The real thing that affects your behavior is not inside of you, it depends on what is around you” (Personality). This explains that personality and different views are based off of the environment one is in, which is everchanging and can clearly affect how you think now from how you used to think in the past.
In my second journal, when reacting to our Meyers-Briggs activity, I took some time to reflect on myself with it. I noticed that part of my test had changed compared to when I took it in early Summer. When thinking about the difference of answers I declared, “Every time I take this I rock between [different outcomes] … and every time I find that I can identify myself with the majority [of the personality]” (Maxa). This was probably the moment in class when I started to think that my personality might not always be the exact same throughout time. It showed me that I can be a different type of person based on my surroundings, such as being in school vs. not being in school.
Looking at sources and different ideas I’ve learned in class, I would say that I agree with the studies and interviews about personality in a variety of different topics covered in class and outside of class. People can change, contrary to popular belief taught to people at a young age, based on different situations they are going through and their environments. Even though I used to believe for a long time that people don’t change, I have learned through growth and learning this is false. I am a much different person compared to who I was just a few years ago. In the next few years, it is very likely that I will be different from who I think I am right now. It is quite easy to see, thanks to this unit and having a much better understanding of the personality concept, that personalities are not always that simple, and that people truly can change.
Creating is definitely something that can always be hard. I love how you found your creativity in makeup as in I don't see or really know many people who truly do it through their make up. I loved your flash fiction being a 6 word story within your photo because it brings your self portrait together very nice. I also agree with your idea that our personalities are changing, I also love how you connected it to pop culture. Our personalities do change and that personality is a complex thing that will never be fully understood.
ReplyDeleteI liked your piece I thought your picture went perfect with your story and wasn't confusing or anything at all. I thought it was nice and you were right about you can express yourself in many different way even though I wouldn't know from experience because I don't where makeup.
ReplyDeleteI know that it isn't always easy to express yourself, so I think it is really cool how you found a way to do it with something you are good at and enjoy. I like how you related other peoples perspectives and your own to make your claim about personality.
ReplyDeleteI've always known you as a bubbly person and simply kind and caring to everyone you meet. I'm glad you've shown that in this piece. It actually took me a minute to find where you flash fiction was before I realized it was in the picture. I thought that was very creative. I always think of six-word stories as big life quotes and I'm glad that was something you took into mind, maybe without realizing it, I don't know, I don't know your thought process when creating this but it was cool nonetheless. The text being above your head, as you explained it as being always on your mind is something I think to be pretty cool. I think of that as someone who looks at something when it's created and says, "How could I make that better?" Always having that creative improvement mindset can really take you a long way in the world. As a society, we're always looking for ways to make things better. Someone like you could definitely change the world.
ReplyDeleteI think that you did a really good job on your flash fiction and self-portrait. I liked how you used a six-word story and still gave a really good understanding about your topic and personality. You did a good job making every word count in your flash fiction. In your reflection you showed that you have many of the same vies on personality as I do. I agree that people are always changing, and no one’s is the same for their entire life. You talk about how you have changed and are still changing so you probably won’t be the same person in a few years. I also think that I am always changing, and I can tell that I am not even the same person I was at the beginning of the school year.
ReplyDeleteYou talk about not being creative and finding it through makeup. That is beautifully illustrated in your picture by combining your photo and your flash together in the photo. Very creative
ReplyDeleteI really the message of your artist statement. I think a lot of people are like you and find makeup and fashion appealing because it gives them the opportunity to stand out and express themselves.
ReplyDeleteI also wrote about the same subject as you for the essay portion. I also agree that people do not have a single personality, but instead are just in the same enviorments, making their behavior a steady pattern.
