Flash Fiction

It's not always how it seems, it’s more
Authors Statement

The reason for this picture is because i am more than what you see. I’m a very shy person so when you first see me you probably just think i don’t want to talk. i usually isolate myself from others most of the time. That really isn’t me, i mean i am a shy person at first. I don’t like to put myself into uncomfortable situations so i just play it safe and stay quiet, when in reality i am the opposite.

I used make my body a black and white normal color this showing that what you see is boring and dull. The colorful background indicated my thoughts and other personalities in their own way. I also chose to cut out the face of my picture and in the middle adding more examples showing i’m not boring and as sad as I look. I’m a very creative, outgoing person and that’ll show from the cut out in my face. Using highlighters for the outside world, the pencil used to outline me all are different ways of using art which contributes to me being creative. Since my creativity and other aspects don’t show as much the black and white outline of myself would be the last thing you see instead of the first thing. The first thing you’ll be able to see this time is the background. This makes the black and white stick out even more because it’s the only thing that is dull in the picture which is what you would see when you first see me also.

Growing up my mom and sister have always had a close relationship. Which includes a weird sense of humor. Especially my father he has almost had a kind of “bad” sense of humor. This helped me get thicker skin and get the same as sense of humor as them. It’s sometimes hard for others to make me laugh because i’ve been surrounded by weird jokes and stuff for awhile. This adds to my humor and makes me laugh even in situations i’m not supposed to. This makes me a happier person in general because i usually tend to find the funny or good side of things.

Reflection

They say When people tend to see others who are quiet and shy at first they tend to think somethings wrong. If someone isn't talking others may think they are sad, or something's going on with them. When we see others who are shy and quiet we tend to shut them out and don’t really try and reach out to them because they were shy and they usually won't talk to you as much. When i see somebody who is manly quiet and keep to themselves i don't branch out and try to communicate with them at all. I use a bias and i automatically think to myself that they wouldn't want to talk. Even with people i know very well when they are quiet it seems like something is wrong. This makes me and others think that was about people we may not know because that's the initial bias we have dealing with somebody quiet or shy.

He/She say
Bias is everywhere. Its an automatic response that we can’t control at first. They’re can be ways to change your bias but most start at a young age which makes it an initial reaction. In the TED talk “How do we overcome bias? Walk boldly toward them” She states that one grows up with a bias. This could be implanted into you from the neighborhood you’ve grown up in. For example if you lived in a very nice side of town with kind people. You may get a bias if you visit the “bad” side of town that these people are “bad” themselves(Meyers). Parents could also influence them by you at a young age listening to their biases or they put it onto you. Bias is hidden deep inside of us. Making this a harder concept to change about ourselves even though its possible. Since bias’s are drilled to your mind since young we have less control over how we think in certain situations.

I Say
I believe that you shouldn’t judge somebody by the way they look. No talking about clothes or their hair or anything. The way shy people act can be hard to judge because you don't know whether they are upset or if they're okay. I know personally that i am not upset. We all have our days where something doesn't go right or maybe were just having a bad day and that can affect our mood and the way we act. Taking that into consideration not everyone thats shy is necessarily upset. They may also have some bias that we all have and they chose not to open up. Me personally i know that i am a genuinely happy person. Opening up to others or putting myself into situations is hard. To avoid that i portray myself as quiet and shy but when in reality i am the opposite.

  1. After reading the flash fiction and viewing the portrait, I predicted that the story you were trying to get across was the other side of you that most people do not get to see. I have a similar personality, so I completely understand what you experience. I look shy on the outside but once you get to know me I am completely different.

  3. I love how simple you made the flash fic without loosing any of the power of it. The portrait is perfectly fitting with the flash fic and overall you did a great job.

  4. I loved how in your in your drawing you didn't just use all pencil you used highlighter too which you can't achieve that vibrant personality you have any other way. Knowing you now compared to knowing you in a class stand point in biology sophomore year this piece is a great reflection of your personality (besides the fact that your style makes your outside appearance not boring). I feel like the black and white would be more of your I am keeping it to myself personality.

  7. Rylie,

You bring up a really interesting point that I've started to think about quite a lot since I became a teacher which is that we live in a society that places more value on extroverted traits. But the reality, is that we really need introverts. A lot of times (especially in class) we hear the voices that are the loudest which aren't always the voices that have the most to say.

Here is a great TED talk about it: https://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts/transcript?language=en

I like how you phrased the power of bias when you said, "Since bias’s are drilled to your mind since young we have less control over how we think in certain situations." I think its so important for each of us to recognize that about ourselves.

Thanks for your careful thinking, Rylie. It was really nice being able to see the creative part of your mind here.

This is who I am

The Outdoors They say the outdoors is a certain place that only a few groups of people like. They also say that its like home. You underestimate what you can see outdoors and what there is to discover beyond the trees. Most people don’t understand what it’s like to be far away civilization and what it's like to be separated from everyone. Where the nearest cell signal is 20 or more miles away. Some people don’t get the chance to get beyond the city or travel out to a national park or an area with scenic view. Some people say they can’t afford it but most the time you only need simple items to make it out in the outdoors or wilderness. They say it comes with many dangers that can affect someone permanently as a person or if they are by themselves. Everything you do outside will either come with a consequence or a positive feature. You can only live once and doing somethings outdoors can kill you. They still say that technology is destroying our national parks and destroying ...

Taller Mountains to Climb

Taller Mountains to Climb Made it this far, not knowing what the world could bring. Authors Note: I chose this picture of me in Colorado because I believe that there is a deeper meaning than me just standing on a rock. I think the rock can represent a strong start, but you can see in the background of the picture that there are bigger rocks to climb. I think this can relate to my life because I am about to graduate, which can be compared to the rock I am standing on. On the other hand, I know that there are bigger rocks and a bigger meaning to life than just high school. Although high school is a good start there is always those “bigger rocks” or bigger problems that I must climb over. I decided to use a longer 6-word story because it also explains the type of personality I have. I like things short, sweet, and to the point. Taking the class perspectives has opened my view of the deeper meaning in small things and realizing that our personalities reflect the perspec...
