Is she Kind
or Cold?
She had always tried to be kind-hearted to everyone. But the reason for the struggle was she also had a dark side that she tried hiding. The side that was negative and judged everyone and anything she saw. It felt like the dark side of her had always tried to control her and her life, yet, it felt like her light side was over powering the dark. When she judged, the light side seemed to have make her feel guilty.
Artist statement
This picture is of me with a dark half and a light half. The idea for it is that I and pretty much all people have a good side and a bad side. In the picture, I edited it to make these sides ‘visible’. So, the story of it is that since people have two sides, some listen more to the good and some listen more to the bad. But in the story, I suppose that I’m explaining more of a guilty conscience.
When I think
of light and dark, for some strange reason, I think of the colors blue and red.
So, the blended background images are blue and red. But to make the dark side
‘darker’, it’s actually more of a black with a red glow to it. And the light
side are these bright blue glowing specks.
Reflection
So what I have learned about personality is simply that everyone has one, but nobody’s are the exact same. For some examples of certain personalities, I’m going to be using my own as a mediator. A lot of times, I think these personality tests are fairly accurate, but no test can realistically be that that precise. In the strengths and weaknesses column, it says that mediators are typically dedicated and hard-working. I dedicate myself to something that I’m interested in and I hate to work hard in school because I just don’t think there’s really anything that I’m good at here.
I’ve learned
quite a bit about biases and how they can be similar and different. Like the
TED Talks speaker, she told us about why biases can be hurtful. Like saying
that all Muslims are terrorists or that all black people smoke weed and deal
drugs and are in gangs and rob. These biases seem to be a common thought. There
have been lots of cases where a police officer that has thought a black man was
a threat and killed an innocent man.
The police
officers were most likely in that bias that all black men, young or old, are
dangerous criminals. But in the talk, the speaker also shared her opinion of
what could happen if we were to embrace young black men, instead of fearing
them. And it would make our country so much better and people would be so much
better, too. She also brought up that in different situations, we tend to lean
on biases we weren’t even aware of. She gave an example of a time when she was
on a plane and heard a female pilot over the planes P.A system and though that
it was pretty awesome that there was a female pilot flying.
But at the point
when the plane went to the stratosphere, she thought to herself, “Man, I hope
she can drive.” She went to lean on a bias she didn’t know she had. She said
that her default is men. A lot of people tend to prefer men over women, to me,
it’s because it wasn’t truly that long ago when females had only two rules. Be
a good house wife and have lots of babies.

Your idea of the dark and light side of everyone was interesting since we all know we have a dark and light side, but yet sometimes we choose to deny we do. I really loved how you took your self portrait picture and edited to show the dark and lights. I also thought the idea of using red and blue was interesting. It seems that in a lot of movies or tv shows, red is evil and blue is good. Can that possibly be a bias we just have? I also could really connect with your flash fiction because personally I have tried to be kind and friendly with others but I notice myself judging even though I don't know the person yet.
ReplyDeleteI loved how you used the bias TED talk. I felt that I related a lot to your story and I sometimes feel the same way you did. I try to help people but sometimes I end up hurting them.
ReplyDeleteYou did an excellent job of showcasing what it means to be human. Everyone has a light side. Everyone has a dark side. This idea perfectly fits with the bias TED Talk, as I feel like overcoming bias is like balancing light and dark. Well done.
ReplyDeleteIt was cool that you talked about biases as a separate and weak part of yourself but a part that feel strong because of guilt. It sounds like an internal struggle that might not be always but happens often. The background being light and dark was also very appropriate.
ReplyDeleteI like for how your overall approach to this topic is what your reflection and flash fiction are about. Your guilt is how you feel towards the biases and there are real life examples. I wasn't able to really do that with mine, but I'm impressed that you were able to with yours. I find it funny how you sit in front of me in class, but here you stand in front of me with your blog. My only concern is the reflection as the they say/I say needs more of an "I say" to it. Other than that, you really did a good job with this. I was engaged and glad I got to know who you are.
ReplyDeleteyour artist statement really does explain on why you chose this picture and gives me better idea on how the rest of the story goes from here.
