Light and Dark

Is she Kind or Cold?

She had always tried to be kind-hearted to everyone. But the reason for the struggle was she also had a dark side that she tried hiding. The side that was negative and judged everyone and anything she saw. It felt like the dark side of her had always tried to control her and her life, yet, it felt like her light side was over powering the dark. When she judged, the light side seemed to have make her feel guilty.

Artist statement

This picture is of me with a dark half and a light half. The idea for it is that I and pretty much all people have a good side and a bad side. In the picture, I edited it to make these sides ‘visible’. So, the story of it is that since people have two sides, some listen more to the good and some listen more to the bad. But in the story, I suppose that I’m explaining more of a guilty conscience.
When I think of light and dark, for some strange reason, I think of the colors blue and red. So, the blended background images are blue and red. But to make the dark side ‘darker’, it’s actually more of a black with a red glow to it. And the light side are these bright blue glowing specks.

Reflection

So what I have learned about personality is simply that everyone has one, but nobody’s are the exact same.  For some examples of certain personalities, I’m going to be using my own as a mediator. A lot of times, I think these personality tests are fairly accurate, but no test can realistically be that that precise. In the strengths and weaknesses column, it says that mediators are typically dedicated and hard-working. I dedicate myself to something that I’m interested in and I hate to work hard in school because I just don’t think there’s really anything that I’m good at here.
I’ve learned quite a bit about biases and how they can be similar and different. Like the TED Talks speaker, she told us about why biases can be hurtful. Like saying that all Muslims are terrorists or that all black people smoke weed and deal drugs and are in gangs and rob. These biases seem to be a common thought. There have been lots of cases where a police officer that has thought a black man was a threat and killed an innocent man.
The police officers were most likely in that bias that all black men, young or old, are dangerous criminals. But in the talk, the speaker also shared her opinion of what could happen if we were to embrace young black men, instead of fearing them. And it would make our country so much better and people would be so much better, too. She also brought up that in different situations, we tend to lean on biases we weren’t even aware of. She gave an example of a time when she was on a plane and heard a female pilot over the planes P.A system and though that it was pretty awesome that there was a female pilot flying.
But at the point when the plane went to the stratosphere, she thought to herself, “Man, I hope she can drive.” She went to lean on a bias she didn’t know she had. She said that her default is men. A lot of people tend to prefer men over women, to me, it’s because it wasn’t truly that long ago when females had only two rules. Be a good house wife and have lots of babies.

  1. Your idea of the dark and light side of everyone was interesting since we all know we have a dark and light side, but yet sometimes we choose to deny we do. I really loved how you took your self portrait picture and edited to show the dark and lights. I also thought the idea of using red and blue was interesting. It seems that in a lot of movies or tv shows, red is evil and blue is good. Can that possibly be a bias we just have? I also could really connect with your flash fiction because personally I have tried to be kind and friendly with others but I notice myself judging even though I don't know the person yet.

  2. I loved how you used the bias TED talk. I felt that I related a lot to your story and I sometimes feel the same way you did. I try to help people but sometimes I end up hurting them.

  3. You did an excellent job of showcasing what it means to be human. Everyone has a light side. Everyone has a dark side. This idea perfectly fits with the bias TED Talk, as I feel like overcoming bias is like balancing light and dark. Well done.

  4. It was cool that you talked about biases as a separate and weak part of yourself but a part that feel strong because of guilt. It sounds like an internal struggle that might not be always but happens often. The background being light and dark was also very appropriate.

  5. I like for how your overall approach to this topic is what your reflection and flash fiction are about. Your guilt is how you feel towards the biases and there are real life examples. I wasn't able to really do that with mine, but I'm impressed that you were able to with yours. I find it funny how you sit in front of me in class, but here you stand in front of me with your blog. My only concern is the reflection as the they say/I say needs more of an "I say" to it. Other than that, you really did a good job with this. I was engaged and glad I got to know who you are.

Flash fiction AJ Wenger       Get out of bed and go to school. Don’t roll over and reset your alarm for another 10 minutes you know that 10 minutes is going to turn into an hour or two. You feel at the time that the extra sleep is so needed until you realize everything your missing at school will need to be made up. you know you’ll get that extra hour of sleep thinking its going to make you feel better the rest of the day but really when you get out of bed you’ll be bored and wished you would’ve gone. Every time you do this to yourself you start to get stressed out and wonder all day what you’re going to tell your parents when the attendance office calls them at 6. After all that stress you’ll go through a whole other wave of stress wondering when and how you can make up for the 7 classes you missed. By the end of the day you’ll realize that yet again you’ve accomplished nothing with your day but the thought of doing it all again tomorrow still is lingering in the b...

Dumb Decisions

Ben Bjornsen Flash Fiction: I am broke, because #race car. Artist Statement: My self-portrait is about my spending all my money on my hobby which is cars. I got into cars from my grandpa when I was a little kid. I didn’t realize how expensive stuff is, so I have no more money. My picture is me on my car in the Kennedy  parking lot looking sad because I spent my money on my car. My car represents where all my money goes. I took it in the Kennedy  parking lot because i don't have a real job that pays well because I go to school. They Say/I Say: People think about bias as an argument   toward  what they believe in even if it doesn't  make sense or is wrong.  Also, some people think they aren’t bias in anyway, but really they are. People will want to be like this because if they are wrong about something, they will do whatever it takes to make you believe their bias not on purpose. But the truth is people do have a bias for something...

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity Artist statement I pick this image because this shows my personality and my mood during my everyday life. The image and text work together to show you that I like to be happy and positive and not be negative all the time. The color and brightness work together to represent positivity.  Reflection People don’t think about that they have a bias. They don’t think about that because they don’t react, and they don’t think about what there saying or what they think about a certain person. For example, When I was a kid, I thought people were always respectful and kind to others and I thought that no one had a bias. I thought this because people were always nice when I said hi to them. People always opened the door for me and they always said thank you. Nice but I realized growing up people have a certain bias. For example, in perspectives, the class taught me that everyone has a bias and that everyone’s bias is different from other people a...
