Bailey's Self-Portrait

Artist statement                                       Bailey Abben

For my self-portrait I want to go for taking a picture in the woods or by a lake. The reason I want to take it there is because I like to hike, fish, swim, and all that stuff you would usually do while hiking or near a lake. I want to show in my portrait that I love to be in the woods. I am trying to show that because I think that has lots of detail with woods behind me because it could mean multiple things such as kayaking, being on a boat, and all that kinds of stuff. This picture is taking place where me, my dad, and sister go a lot for fishing in the summer. This is usually where me and my sister would go hiking while my dads fishing because after a while of me not catching anything my sister and I would get bored so we would go explore because there is a lot of woods and once you go down one trail there is three other ways you could go so its very easy to get lost. We also usually must be very careful because once you get out past a few trails you have no cell service, so we always had to stay within where dad could hear us yell or whatever just in case.

We would go there a lot we also a few times went on a boat with family and we would just go, and fish and we would usually be out there for a while, so we would have to bring a lot of supplies. These supplies usually where the basics like sunscreen, bug spray, water, worms, lunch and a whole bunch of stuff.

But the point out of this portrait I was trying to make was I love the wilderness and I love to spend time with my sister and my dad. I also love to fish because that has always been my dad, my sister and I hobbies that we would all do together case we all enjoyed it.

We just couldn’t do it a lot this summer because my sister and dad worked all the time and the river was up high almost all summer, so we couldn’t get to it cause part of the road would flood if the water was high. So, as I said before I love spending time I thought if I took this portrait here it would be a good description and all of that for what I was going for and all of that.

We also usually have to be very careful because once you get out past a few trails because you have no bars on our phone’s so we always had to stay within where dad could hear us yell or whatever just to be safe.

We just couldn’t do it a lot this summer because my sister and dad worked all the time and the river was up really high almost all summer so we couldn’t get to it cause part of the road would flood if the water was high, so as I said before I love spending time I thought if I took this portrait here it would be a good description and all of that for what I was going for and all of that.

Reflection

For my picture I am doing it on a bridge with water underneath. The bridge I am doing it on or by means a lot to me. I love to be able to take a picture for something that is really important not only for school but to me as well. Me and my dad are really close and I want to represent and be happy with my choice of area. I love to be able to share stories that are so important to me. This is the main reason I am taking this picture here because it was hard to think of something that is really important to me and be able to take a picture of it. So it took a lot of thinking because I am really close with a lot of my family on my dad’s side that is. I am having my cousin help me because she is good at taking pictures. I also wanted to do this picture where I did because it is very important because it represents a lot of the hobbies I like to do. Some of the hobbies I love doing are exploring, biking, swimming, and a few other ones. Whenever me and my sister and dad would go fishing there I would just get a little bored after a while so I would ask my dad If I could go explore he always said yes but there were a few times it was a little dark so he would make my sister go with me if she wanted to if she didn’t I wouldn’t go because I didn’t want her to be bored just so I could have fun. This picture has a lot of story behind it and so that is mainly how I chose what picture I was doing and where I was doing it so this picture is not only important to me but probably my dad as well.

  1. Bailey:

I was really cool hearing about the experiences you have with your family. Places become really important to us, almost as much as people sometimes. I've seen that is several of the portraits this year.

I wish I could have seen your image (it's not viewable here) and to hear your reflection on how the year has been going for you and what you will take with you moving forward in this class about personality, bias, and perspective.

This is who I am

The Outdoors They say the outdoors is a certain place that only a few groups of people like. They also say that its like home. You underestimate what you can see outdoors and what there is to discover beyond the trees. Most people don’t understand what it’s like to be far away civilization and what it's like to be separated from everyone. Where the nearest cell signal is 20 or more miles away. Some people don’t get the chance to get beyond the city or travel out to a national park or an area with scenic view. Some people say they can’t afford it but most the time you only need simple items to make it out in the outdoors or wilderness. They say it comes with many dangers that can affect someone permanently as a person or if they are by themselves. Everything you do outside will either come with a consequence or a positive feature. You can only live once and doing somethings outdoors can kill you. They still say that technology is destroying our national parks and destroying ...

Taller Mountains to Climb

Taller Mountains to Climb Made it this far, not knowing what the world could bring. Authors Note: I chose this picture of me in Colorado because I believe that there is a deeper meaning than me just standing on a rock. I think the rock can represent a strong start, but you can see in the background of the picture that there are bigger rocks to climb. I think this can relate to my life because I am about to graduate, which can be compared to the rock I am standing on. On the other hand, I know that there are bigger rocks and a bigger meaning to life than just high school. Although high school is a good start there is always those “bigger rocks” or bigger problems that I must climb over. I decided to use a longer 6-word story because it also explains the type of personality I have. I like things short, sweet, and to the point. Taking the class perspectives has opened my view of the deeper meaning in small things and realizing that our personalities reflect the perspec...

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity Artist statement I pick this image because this shows my personality and my mood during my everyday life. The image and text work together to show you that I like to be happy and positive and not be negative all the time. The color and brightness work together to represent positivity.  Reflection People don’t think about that they have a bias. They don’t think about that because they don’t react, and they don’t think about what there saying or what they think about a certain person. For example, When I was a kid, I thought people were always respectful and kind to others and I thought that no one had a bias. I thought this because people were always nice when I said hi to them. People always opened the door for me and they always said thank you. Nice but I realized growing up people have a certain bias. For example, in perspectives, the class taught me that everyone has a bias and that everyone’s bias is different from other people a...
