Flash fiction:
More Espresso,
Less Depresso:
This idea keeps me up at night,
With a smile on my face,
And a mind full of memories.
Artist’s Statement:
The photo and flash fiction have multiple messages within them. The main objects
of focus are the Cthulhu mask, the eyes and the sign, but the background also holds
significance. The Cthulhu mask is representative of two things: my goofiness and
my passion for thinking about the unknown, as Cthulhu is often used as a symbol
of the unknown. I left the red eyes unedited because I enjoy how they look, and
realized that they perfectly symbolize how much I like mistakes that turn out to have a cool
final result. “More Espresso, Less Depresso” is a reference to how much I love coffee
and how it brings people together. This is a message in both my flash fiction and my
photo. Some of my favorite memories are of me going to a coffee shop with friends
and family and just having a great time. As weird as it sounds, drinking coffee always
hits me with waves of nostalgia. Finally, the background of my photo is my grandparents house, a place that I find very special. The picture in the background is an old photo of my grandparents
that I like to think of as a hint to the audience about what this place is.
Reflection:
Some people say that identities are impacted by the choices that we make, but to
who is this impact apparent? Is it someone’s own idea of their identity that changes,
or is the change only based off of other people’s judgments? While some would
say identity is defined by one’s own self,
I believe that today, people’s identities are being defined by society as a result of bias and
stereotypes. The only way to correct this continuous misinterpretation of identity,
as a society (in my opinion) is to reach out to new groups of people to gain a better
understanding of the world
around us.
In her 2014 TED Talk, “How to Overcome Bias”, diversity advocate, Verna Meyers,
discusses the everyday examples of bias and what it makes people do, from
pedestrians moving to the opposite side of the street, to police officers shooting
minorities due to popular stereotypes being deeply ingrained in their minds. To add
more urgency to her argument, Meyers goes on to say that nobody is bias-free,
even the people we look up to the most. She uses the example of a family dinner,
where she delves into every family member’s hidden bias. As she put it in the
Ted Talk, “You love grandma, but grandma is kind of racist.” (Meyers). Meyers
says that to fix this deeply rooted issue, we must not run from our biases, but
we should “walk toward our biases” (Meyers) and tackle them head on in order to
overcome them.
I completely agree with Meyers’ argument, as I believe running from bias
only makes it worse. Her point of walking towards our biases perfectly aligns
with my idea of reaching out to people of different groups, whether
they’re of a different gender, ethnicity, sexuality or religion than you. We must learn
face the fear that comes with bias, which in turn will grant us deeper understanding
of other people’s identities. In time, after making this a regular practice, we as a
society may be able to do less labeling and become more accepting when it comes
to identity. In the end, identifies are meant to be self defined, not defined by
other people. Hopefully we can keep that as a universal truth.
coffee helps me in the morning and i see noting wrong on this paper
ReplyDeleteI think it's kind of interesting what you think of when you think of coffee. Cool.
ReplyDeleteSam, what about it stood out to you as interesting?
DeleteThe picture is really quirky and interesting. Coffee is something that many people enjoy, which is why I agree with your statement saying "Coffee...brings people together." The agreement of the ideas presented in "How to Overcome Bias" was developed to a deeper level of complexity in your piece, making the ideas your own.
ReplyDeleteThe picture is awesome for one and I relate to the whole , mistakes that turn out cool, mentality you got going on. Nice
ReplyDeleteCoffee and Cthulu; a power combo.
ReplyDeletelol
DeleteNot going to lie, this grabbed my attention because of the Self Portrait, it is kinda crazy, but still makes sense. It is really clear that you are a goofy person, who loves coffee. I think what I relate most to is your They say/I say. I agree with you that we must learn to face our biases, in order to create a more accepting society.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely interesting, the whole mask and title are definite attention getters and your message is simple.
ReplyDeleteWhat a guy
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the best pictures chosen for this project in my opinion it attracts more people because its so interesting I liked how you were able to have a reason for every little thing in this photo to help give us a info on you as a person.
ReplyDeleteYour photo and flash fiction really stood out to me when I was scrolling through because the whole coffee aspect and the fact you are wearing a Cthulhu mask, but when I read further into your artist statement I became really interested in the meaning. I think its really cool how your portrait and flash fiction have such a deep meaning to you.
ReplyDeleteI think its really cool and unique how you came up with "more espresso, less depresso". I think its cool because its spreading positivity and telling people to not be depressed, and just drink coffee. I also liked the photo you took, when you said that you left the read eyes unedited because you like when mistakes turn into cool things, I do too.
ReplyDeleteI think this is hilarious and i like your use of rhymes is very clever
ReplyDeleteI am an avid coffee drinker too and some of the best memories I have are of in the early morning with my grand parents just not a care in the world.
ReplyDeleteloved the whole idea. just using the format and being silly but also a message about yourself.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably the weirdest one ive seen but I think its good cause your expressing your true self and not some serious bull that this project is trying to make you do.
ReplyDeleteI really like your flash fiction, The first phrase was very creative!
ReplyDeleteYour portrait definitely stood out to me and I loved reading the rest of your project! Not many people did something silly for their portrait so I think this was a really good and original spin on our project. I think embracing our fun side can really help us focus on the positives in life. Awesome job!
ReplyDeleteI love your view on coffee as being more of a nostalgic beverage that brings people together rather than just some drink that gives you energy. The image is a clear representation of you being yourself and I like how you kept your eyes red to show that you aren't perfect and you make mistakes.
ReplyDeleteYour portrait really stood out to me because it was very unique and vastly different from what most everyone else is doing. i liked your flash fiction a lot even though I am not a very big coffee drinker, and I don't get the same feeling from coffee that you do, i still enjoyed it. I think the picture is the best part of your project by far, it really stands out from all the others
ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction is just as powerful as it is short, and, of course, ties into the legendary image you've go there. I like the expression; "more expresso, less depresso" it's funny and you just go with it.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job with your flash fiction, i really enjoyed reading it and the term "more expresso, less depresso" is very catchy.
