Humans

This is how you are born, this is how you live, this is how you enjoy whatever time you have left, this is how you don’t let the dread set in… DON’T LET IT! This is how to enjoy eating, this is how you enjoy your life and who you are.

The theme I to create with my picture was you need to enjoy life as much as you can without hurting yourself with a little comedy. The “dread” in the comic is to symbolize that life will end at some point. The way that I helped the picture with the text is I went with a more comedy piece to show there is good in life, there is fun, but you can bring yourself down just by thinking. You should love yourself and not worry what else life will throw at you.

When people think about bias they think it is an easy thing to overcome. That they don’t have to try and can change how they think about something in an instant. When in reality you either have to try so much and nothing will change or you will change, but subconsciously will still have the same bias.
When you take into account the many researchers who study bias they often catch themselves after, not before or during when thinking about someone and how they think about them. Such as a Verna Myers, a person who studies personal biases and how we can overcome them, she was walking home with a friend, Verna Myers is a black woman, and her friend is Korean. It was nighttime and Verna saw a black man walking and she needed directions so she was going to ask, but her friend was saying no and not willing towards him saying he looks scary, but Verna did talk to him and she got directions and even a friendly conversation. After the act Verna’s friend realized that she was very rude to the man, knowing she played into her biases, knowing that if it was a white man she would gladly walk up to him and ask for directions. The reason Verna brought this up she showed that even if her friend didn’t even realize that she had a bias towards white people compared to black people.

At the beginning of the year, when I first thought about bias, I was sure I could just change on a dime. Soon I began to see how you can change, but it is a very slow process and it is not very easy. After about 3 weeks I took a test to know my biases and I found that even though I thought I didn’t have many, turns out I did. I have been trying to change and as Verna Myers said walk towards my biases and not away.

  1. It's interesting that you point out that thinking about "dread" can prevent you from living life to the fullest. I agree that all our worries about the future prevent us from living to the fullest in the present.

  2. I really relate to this one because that dread has set in before and its hard to come back from, but I really enjoyed the topic of the piece. I am curious on where your inspiration comes from also I really enjoyed the style of the art!

  3. This is an interesting piece. The image is interesting and I'd like to know how it represents you. I like how well thought out your they say/i say is, and how you reflected on how your thoughts about bias and such have changed since the beginning of the year.

This is who I am

The Outdoors They say the outdoors is a certain place that only a few groups of people like. They also say that its like home. You underestimate what you can see outdoors and what there is to discover beyond the trees. Most people don’t understand what it’s like to be far away civilization and what it's like to be separated from everyone. Where the nearest cell signal is 20 or more miles away. Some people don’t get the chance to get beyond the city or travel out to a national park or an area with scenic view. Some people say they can’t afford it but most the time you only need simple items to make it out in the outdoors or wilderness. They say it comes with many dangers that can affect someone permanently as a person or if they are by themselves. Everything you do outside will either come with a consequence or a positive feature. You can only live once and doing somethings outdoors can kill you. They still say that technology is destroying our national parks and destroying ...

Taller Mountains to Climb

Taller Mountains to Climb Made it this far, not knowing what the world could bring. Authors Note: I chose this picture of me in Colorado because I believe that there is a deeper meaning than me just standing on a rock. I think the rock can represent a strong start, but you can see in the background of the picture that there are bigger rocks to climb. I think this can relate to my life because I am about to graduate, which can be compared to the rock I am standing on. On the other hand, I know that there are bigger rocks and a bigger meaning to life than just high school. Although high school is a good start there is always those “bigger rocks” or bigger problems that I must climb over. I decided to use a longer 6-word story because it also explains the type of personality I have. I like things short, sweet, and to the point. Taking the class perspectives has opened my view of the deeper meaning in small things and realizing that our personalities reflect the perspec...

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity

Smile and Pursue happiness, not negativity Artist statement I pick this image because this shows my personality and my mood during my everyday life. The image and text work together to show you that I like to be happy and positive and not be negative all the time. The color and brightness work together to represent positivity.  Reflection People don’t think about that they have a bias. They don’t think about that because they don’t react, and they don’t think about what there saying or what they think about a certain person. For example, When I was a kid, I thought people were always respectful and kind to others and I thought that no one had a bias. I thought this because people were always nice when I said hi to them. People always opened the door for me and they always said thank you. Nice but I realized growing up people have a certain bias. For example, in perspectives, the class taught me that everyone has a bias and that everyone’s bias is different from other people a...
