Flash fiction
AJ Wenger
Get out of bed and go to school. Don’t roll over and reset
your alarm for another 10 minutes you know that 10 minutes is going to turn
into an hour or two. You feel at the time that the extra sleep is so needed
until you realize everything your missing at school will need to be made up.
you know you’ll get that extra hour of sleep thinking its going to make you
feel better the rest of the day but really when you get out of bed you’ll be
bored and wished you would’ve gone. Every time you do this to yourself you
start to get stressed out and wonder all day what you’re going to tell your
parents when the attendance office calls them at 6. After all that stress
you’ll go through a whole other wave of stress wondering when and how you can
make up for the 7 classes you missed. By the end of the day you’ll realize that
yet again you’ve accomplished nothing with your day but the thought of doing it
all again tomorrow still is lingering in the back of your head.
Artist statement
In both my flash fiction and my self portrait I’m trying to
show the internal struggle I have with my self every day to get out of bed and
go to school. In my self portrait you’ll notice the weights these have a great
meaning showing how I feel weighted to my bed by my consionse. I chose this
picture because I feel like no matter how you look at the picture it has a
different meaning. I picked to write this story in second person because I feel
like it helped explain the story better.
Self reflection
Most people in this world like to think that racism and bias
doesn’t exist anymore. They tell them self’s that if they don’t say things
about other people it means they dent have a bias. But this semester I learned
that everyone has a bias towards curtain people no matter what. Even if you don’t
speak about it your brain is always making assumptions about people this is
called an implisat bias. No matter what we do this will never go away and will
always make assumptions about people we don’t even know.
One of the films we watched in class was a ted talk done by
Verna Meyers she stated that everyone in the world had bias no matter what. She
talked about the ways she felt like we could overcome them as a community and
believed if we all accepted the fact that we cant control it we would have an
easier time overcoming it. She also
believed even if you feel like you’re the nicest person ever and you would
never make assumptions about someone that your brain is automatically going to
make an assumption about someone when they walk into the room. Even she talked
about having her own bias and she couldn’t control that.
I believe that no matter what we do bias will never go away.
Although I do believe we can change the way we see them. When you pre judge
someone and treat them different before you know them that’s not going to help
us get out of this bias world were in. we have to treat every one the exact
same no matter what we think when we see them for the first time. Only then
will we truly start to eliminate bias because no matter what we do were always
going to think differently of different people.
Your flash fiction did a very good job of following the rules of how a flash fiction piece should be. In second person and it reminded me of the "Girl" Paper that we read in class because its almost like your giving yourself instructions. You also had a very good explanation in your Artist statement, with a very good meaning behind it!
ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction was a great piece of writing. It captured a good image and puts a clear thought in the readers head. Your artists statement went in depth about your explanation which is good.
ReplyDeleteThe way that you arranged you flash fiction was very moving. I have trouble getting up and just going to the shower after sleep and I always think "ehh, what can a few more minutes hurt?" and you did convey how it does feel.
ReplyDeleteThe flash fiction perfectly painted a picture of how I feel waking up in the morning. I also thought your artist statement was very thorough, yet to the point of what the message is. Noice job.
ReplyDeleteyour flash fiction explains almost evreything we need to know on how you feel in the morning so GOOD JOB!!!
ReplyDeleteVery nicely done on the flash fiction I can relate HARD to this piece of writing because i as well HATE going to school and would much rather stay in my bed and play black ops for sure.
ReplyDeleteYour Flash Fiction was very well explained and very well arranged, I think that a lot of people can agree with your flash fiction. Your artist statement is also very well structured. Overall this blog looks very appealing and is a good read.
ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction was very detailed. I can relate to this piece of writing a lot I also do not like getting out of bed everyday to go to school and I am always thinking on what I can say to get out of it this time, and you are right it is pointless yet I keep doing it. This story was very good and it had my attention the whole time good job.
ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction was well written, and I really enjoyed it because I think that it is very relatable because that's how I feel every morning. You used good detail in the flash fiction, so I got a good understanding and it was very interesting. I agree with your reflection when you talk about how everyone has a bias no matter how much we think we don't. I liked how you talked about something to help that problem is that we should all try to treat everyone the exact same.
ReplyDeleteAj I enjoyed reading this because I think that every high school student can relate to that feeling of instant gratification from skipping one day of school only to have it followed up with a sinking feeling of anxiety and regret. your piece really gives an inside look to a teenagers mind and it is very in depth which is interesting. keep pushing brotha you only got this year and you will be done! you got this!
ReplyDeleteYes, instant gratification! I think it gets easier but doesn't go away when you become an "adult."
Deletethe way you explained the purpose of everything in the photo was very well done, also i loved they way the flash fiction and self portrait were funny
ReplyDeleteI feel like every student struggles with Mornings at some point in high school. Your Flash fiction is a perfect example of what I deal with on occasion, just ten more minutes of sleep! Your opinion in your Reflection is something that I agree with. People cant leave a bias only hide it or alter it. If bias never goes away how do we improve on issues of where bias hurts others?
ReplyDeleteI can definitely relate to the desire to sleep in an avoid class and problems, and i can relate to the immense stress that causes when you miss out on school work as well. I feel like your flash fiction was very good because most kids nowadays can put themselves in that same exact situation, so it has a lot of meaning not just for yourself, but for most other kids in our age group

ReplyDeleteYour flash fiction really speaks to me because that's how I feel every morning when I wake up and realize I have to go to school. Your artist statement does a great job of explaining the flash fiction and picture together. Overall it was a great piece.
ReplyDeleteAJ,
ReplyDeleteAm I missing something? I can't see your image! I WANT TO SEE IT! BLERG. Well, your flash fiction captured the bargaining we do inside our heads from time to time. We know logically that sleeping another 10 minutes will not make the difference between feeling tired or feeling rested. Yet, we do it despite knowing this, like when you say, "You feel at the time that the extra sleep is so needed until you realize everything your missing."
This kind of psychological bargaining is the basis for any additive behavior. I know we give you a hard time in class about attendance, but in the end, for the pressure to work, it has to come from you. I think one of the most important things you do in your work here is acknowledge how certain choices makes you feel at the end of the day which felt honest and real. Not everyone can be real with themselves like that.
That honesty is also clear in your reflection about bias. It seems to be the first step for you personally and for society at large to deal with any issue which is to wake up (lol) and be honest with yourself. Denial works in the short term but isn't sustainable (at least without causing real damage over time).
I hope you find a find a strategy or a focused motivation that helps you keep yourself honest with, well, yourself. Thanks for your thoughts, AJ.
