Changed

Flash fiction

The years have changed you. You know they have. Your smiles aren't as bright. Your laughter is shorter and not as loud as it once was. Your eyes, once bright with hopes of the future, and now they are aged past their years. They have seen more than they need to. The poison of the world, and the shadows of death. They have seen the mistakes you made, and it sees were things could have been better. You wish you had known then.

Artist statement

I choose the image of me, head down and eyes closed, to show remorse, sorrow, and hopelessness. I drew it in pen to show how i believed i looked. I dont show emotion well on camera, so i drew it out on paper. I wanted to convey how it feels to have nothing left. To be alone. I choose my flash fiction to express the feelings of having changed. The feeling of knowing that you have changed beyond recognition, even if it’s not just physically. To show the emotion of loss, pain, and regret.

Art thing

People seem to believe that a person’s personality is unchanging. Unwavering and solid. That once you are a certain way that's how you'll always be. Like with the Invisibilia Podcast, “The personality myth’, The woman thought that since Dan had been that way all those years ago, he was still a violent and dangerous man, that he still wanted to hurt people and to be evil. That a person's’ personality is permanent, and unchanging no matter the amount of time that has passed, but people change due to circumstances if you ask me. People will change if you want them to or not if they go through something that was too difficult for the old them to handle.

The soldier vs scout Ted Talk  says, "that everyone has a solider or a scout mindset.  The soldier mindset of i must be right no matter what, to prove you are right even if you aren't. Or the scout mindset that you need to see both sides and to find all the facts before choosing. It’s more objective point of view on the situation."  It’s been said that you have either or, and no chance of being in between. That your personality doesn’t change unless you want it to and you work on for years. I don't think that's exactly true.

Personality changes with time, and situation. Yes there are key points on what makes a person, such as creativity, ability, and how much you care.. But things such as how strong they are, their view on life, their hopefulness. Those things change to the situation. How someone can go from being on top of the world to rock bottom, it changes how a person is and how their personality is. I learned so much about this in class, but also in life. In just the four years i've been here in this school i have changed. I used to be a hyperactive kid that didn't really care about anything school related and just wanted to have fun and honestly i was selfish too. Now in my senior year, i'm focus, caring, worried, stressed and i know that life is going to be hard and that there isn't time for fun anymore. That the world will chew you up and spit you out. That yes, it may seem that you don't change, and that's only until you are put into a situation that requires you to change, or to not continue. So, yes, personality changes, even though many people say it doenst. It just takes the right situations.

Comments

  1. I know the feeling of regret and wanting to take everything back and just be depressed and losing a lot.

  2. Your picture grabbed my attention. You talk about being alone and hopeless on your artist statement and you did cover that on your Self-Portrait picture.

  3. Your flash fiction is pretty powerful and I feel I can connect to it. It connects to the title to show how we do change as we get older as well as have feelings of loneliness, as conveyed in the art. Nice hand drawn piece as well.

Flash fiction AJ Wenger       Get out of bed and go to school. Don’t roll over and reset your alarm for another 10 minutes you know that 10 minutes is going to turn into an hour or two. You feel at the time that the extra sleep is so needed until you realize everything your missing at school will need to be made up. you know you’ll get that extra hour of sleep thinking its going to make you feel better the rest of the day but really when you get out of bed you’ll be bored and wished you would’ve gone. Every time you do this to yourself you start to get stressed out and wonder all day what you’re going to tell your parents when the attendance office calls them at 6. After all that stress you’ll go through a whole other wave of stress wondering when and how you can make up for the 7 classes you missed. By the end of the day you’ll realize that yet again you’ve accomplished nothing with your day but the thought of doing it all again tomorrow still is lingering in the b...

This is who I am

The Outdoors They say the outdoors is a certain place that only a few groups of people like. They also say that its like home. You underestimate what you can see outdoors and what there is to discover beyond the trees. Most people don’t understand what it’s like to be far away civilization and what it's like to be separated from everyone. Where the nearest cell signal is 20 or more miles away. Some people don’t get the chance to get beyond the city or travel out to a national park or an area with scenic view. Some people say they can’t afford it but most the time you only need simple items to make it out in the outdoors or wilderness. They say it comes with many dangers that can affect someone permanently as a person or if they are by themselves. Everything you do outside will either come with a consequence or a positive feature. You can only live once and doing somethings outdoors can kill you. They still say that technology is destroying our national parks and destroying ...

Taller Mountains to Climb

Taller Mountains to Climb Made it this far, not knowing what the world could bring. Authors Note: I chose this picture of me in Colorado because I believe that there is a deeper meaning than me just standing on a rock. I think the rock can represent a strong start, but you can see in the background of the picture that there are bigger rocks to climb. I think this can relate to my life because I am about to graduate, which can be compared to the rock I am standing on. On the other hand, I know that there are bigger rocks and a bigger meaning to life than just high school. Although high school is a good start there is always those “bigger rocks” or bigger problems that I must climb over. I decided to use a longer 6-word story because it also explains the type of personality I have. I like things short, sweet, and to the point. Taking the class perspectives has opened my view of the deeper meaning in small things and realizing that our personalities reflect the perspec...
